The purpose of this course is to assist participants in understanding their professional, ethical, and legal responsibilities in the identification of safety issues in ADLs and IADLs as they evaluate and provide intervention to clients. In addition, the importance of utilizing data from both objective and subjective sources to determine risk of harm in performing daily activities is stressed. Once identified, the probability of risk must then be communicated through written and verbal methods to the client and others on a need-to-know basis, in compliance with applicable laws and ethical principles. This may include families, caregivers, and other professionals as well as reporting to state and local agencies. The example of driving is discussed in detail to illustrate how deficits identified in a general occupational therapy evaluation can translate into potentially serious driving safety issues, not only for the individual client but also for the public at large, and cannot be ignored or left for a therapist specializing in driving, in this case, to identify. The material includes not only lecture format but also interactive case studies and resources to enhance learning on this topic.
- Recognize the professional and ethical obligation of practitioners to identify performance deficits that may affect safety in ADLs and IADLs.
- Recognize the principles in the Occupational Therapy Code of Ethics and Ethics Standards (2010) (American Occupational Therapy Association [AOTA], 2010a) that support the ethical responsibility of practitioners to identify and communicate the potential for harm to clients and relevant stakeholders.

Deborah Yarett Slater, MS, OT/L, FAOTA has over 38 years of experience in clinical and administrative positions in a broad variety of organizational settings. Her clinical specialty area is hand rehabilitation but for over 20 years, she focused on management roles overseeing large single and multidisciplinary departments in both inpatient and outpatient settings. She has developed start up off-site satellite clinics for several organizations including new program development and has extensive experience in financial management, as well as reimbursement. Deborah has also been active in a variety of volunteer leadership positions for her state OT association and AOTA, including AMSIS (Administration and Management Special Interest Section) committee member and chair, SISC (Special Interest Section Council) chair, Practice Representative to the Ethics Commission (EC), member of the AOTA Board of Directors and chair of the ad hoc committee on Scope of Practice. Since June of 2003, she has worked for AOTA as a practice associate and staff liaison to the Ethics Commission and the Special Interest Sections. She has done numerous presentations on ethics at state and national conferences and has also published book chapters and continuing education products on this subject. In addition, she co-edits the AOTA Scope of Practice Issues Update newsletter and has done conference workshops and an AudioInsight™ Continuing Education presentation on Understanding and Asserting the Occupational Therapy Scope of Practice with AOTA colleagues.
Deborah is a Fellow of the American Occupational Therapy Association and has received numerous Service Awards for various volunteer leadership positions. In 2002, she received the Herbert Hall Award for Outstanding Service to the Occupational Therapy Profession from the Massachusetts Association for Occupational Therapy (MAOT). In May, 2005 she received the Distinguished Alumna Award from Columbia University in New York City.
