This course is based on Chapter 8 of AOTA’s best-selling publication, Best Practices for Occupational Therapy in Schools. With this continuing education activity, you will read the chapter content provided in the course and consider best practices for Supporting Student Access to School Environments. Twelve multiple choice exam questions are provided to assess your learning.

OT practitioners working in schools will benefit from this course and have appropriate resources and skills to enhance the provision of school-based services.

Learning Objectives:

1. Identify the purpose of federal laws that guarantee access to environments, supports and modifications, school meals, educational programs with peers, effective curriculum and instruction, and services for students with disabilities.

2. Indicate how to use direct observation to identify barriers and supports to access in the contexts and environment (e.g., physical, social, cultural, temporal, virtual, and personal) and occupations/activities in the school setting.

3. Apply the concept of environmental press to identify the fit of environments on accessibility and participation for students with disabilities.
