CREDIT:  Earn:  4.5 CEUs (45 contact hours, 56.25 NBCOT PDUs)

The courses in this package offer information to enable safe administration of thermal and electrical modalities that are occupationally relevant within the clinical setting. Current occupational therapy terminology and philosophy are provided to establish the theoretical basis for the use of physical agent modalities as an adjunct to occupational therapy services.

The courses were developed to educate practitioners in the proper, safe and judicious use of physical agent modalities when treating their clients, and are appropriate for training and continuing education requirements set by various state licensure boards. The format includes lecture, demonstration and practicum, and case study presentation with emphasis on treatment planning and assessing treatment effectiveness. A posttest format is employed to demonstrate mastery of the material presented; a score of 80% is required to obtain the CEU certificate.

Learning Objectives:

Following participation in both of these courses, the learner will be able to:

·       Differentiate physical impairments from deficits in occupational performance

·       Delineate the biological, psychosocial, and contextual issues resulting in impairment of occupation participation

·       Identify the biological, psychosocial and contextual problems that could be enhanced through the use of physical agent modalities

·       Determine the appropriate intervention following careful assessment of the underlying biological, psychosocial and contextual pathology

·       Identify effective responses from those that are not effective and adjust interventions accordingly

·       Identify indications and contraindications for all modalities within course
