Falls Among Community-Dwelling Older Adults: Overview, Evaluation, and Assessment is the first module in a three-part series of online continuing education courses on fall prevention. Subsequent modules will focus on fall reduction in acute care settings and intervention strategies to reduce falls among community-dwelling older adults. The content of each module will support occupational therapists in their efforts to provide evidence-based fall prevention services to older adults who are at risk for falling or who seek preventive services. Falls Among Community-Dwelling Older Adults is divided into two sections, both providing opportunities for course participants to apply core course concepts.
Section 1: Understanding Falls Among Community-Dwelling Older Adults: Prevalence, Consequences, and Risk Factors
- Part 1-examines the problem of falls among older adults.
- Part 2-reviews fall risk factors.
Section 2: Approaches to the Evaluation of Fall Risk
- Part 1-provides an introduction to evaluation portion of the course.
- Part 2-presents evaluation perspectives based on the Framework.
- Part 3-provides theoretical perspectives on evaluating fall risk and features descriptions of how the Person "Environment"Occupation Model and the Model of Human Occupation can be used to inform the evaluation process associated with fall risk assessment.
- Part 4-discusses how occupational therapists can use the American Geriatric Society (AGS) and British Geriatric Society Fall Prevention Guideline in practice.
- Part 5-provides a list of recommended Web sites relevant to fall prevention.
- Part 6-conclusion.
After completing this course and taking the exam, participants will be able to
- Identify features of the problem of falls among older adults with respect to prevalence, morbidity, mortality, and financial cost;
- Identify the strongest intrinsic fall risk factors, and environmental and behavioral risk factors, for falls among older adults;
- Recognize that multifactorial risk factors often interact to increase fall risk;
- Identify the role of occupational therapy in fall prevention and the goal of occupational therapy-based fall risk evaluation efforts;
- Recognize why evaluation of fall risk is essential to effective intervention;
- Identify key features of the evaluation process outlined in the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework: Domain and Process and the ways in which the evaluation process supports occupational therapyâ€“based efforts to reduce fall risk among older adults;
- Identify central concepts associated with the Person "Environment" Occupation Model and the Model of Human Occupation and assessments that support application of these models to fall prevention efforts;
- Identify procedures associated with the key assessments used to determine fall risk;
- Identify key aspects of the American Geriatrics Society/British Geriatrics Society (2010) Clinical Practice Guideline: Prevention of Falls in Older Persons; and
- Recognize that Web-based resources are available to support occupational therapists' knowledge of and involvement in national, state, and local fall prevention initiatives.
