Falls Module II: Falls Among Older Adults in the Hospital Setting is the second module in a 3-part series of online courses on fall prevention. It provides an overview of the problem of falls that occur in the hospital setting and focuses further on the identification of older adults at risk for falls, the factors that contribute to fall risks, and the assessment strategies that involve occupational therapy expertise. Fall risk factors are diverse and the process of identifying those factors are normally an interdisciplinary effort. Falls Module II describes the role of occupational therapy in both individualized and system-wide, hospital-based fall prevention programs. The course prepares participants to draw from their understanding of the occupational therapy domain and assessment process to articulate to other health care providers and clients their unique contributions to assess and provide strategies to help reduce fall risks.
Note: The Falls Module II course addresses specific areas and topics but briefly overlaps with the other two courses in the series as well because fall prevention principles and strategies can apply across settings.

In this 3-part series on falls among older adults, the first module is an overview on evaluation and assessment, the second module focuses on hospital settings, and the third module deals with intervention strategies. Each module supports occupational therapy practitioners in their efforts to provide evidence-based fall prevention services to older adults who are at risk for falling or seeking preventative services.
After completing this course and taking the exam, participants will be able to
- Identify the problem of falls in acute care settings with respect to prevalence, consequences, and costs.
- Identify risk factors that contribute to falls among older adults in acute care hospitals.
- Recognize that falls can be considered a geriatric syndrome that is multifactorial in nature and associated with substantial morbidity and poor outcomes.
- Recognize the CMS and Joint Commission regulations related to falls that occur in the hospital.
- Delineate why occupational therapists are important contributors to interdisciplinary efforts to prevent falls among older adults in acute care settings.
- Identify assessment strategies used to identify older adults at risk for falls in acute care settings and appropriate interventions for the hospital setting and recommendations for discharge.
- Recognize how the American Geriatrics Society/British Geriatrics Society Clinical Practice Guideline: Prevention of Falls in Older Persons can be applied to occupational therapy service provision in hospitals.
- Recognize that many Web-based resources are available to support occupational therapists’ knowledge of and involvement in national, state, and local fall prevention initiatives.
