Course Description
Occupational therapy has a lot to offer the public. When we take traditional approaches to our practices and to the idea of wellness, we fit occupational therapy into already existing programs for people in at-risk groups. Although these are great applications, they limit the possibilities for occupational therapy to have an impact on the public. Our focus on living a satisfying life embraces a global view about wellness, and invites us to consider the larger impact occupational therapy can have if we think BIG. In this course, we will explore the official documents and materials that support our concept of wellness, review examples of interdisciplinary literature on wellness, and explore strengths models from other disciplines as a way to inform our bigger thinking. Finally, we will examine our own practices and design an action plan for imbedding health and wellness perspectives into our current work, and consider how we can expand our influence to the public.
