Adolescents and Young Adults with ASD are generating a large volume of personal narratives and self-advocacy work, highlighting the challenges and opportunities in their lives. These perspectives have to inform practice in order to impact the participation and quality of life that the person with ASD wants. By viewing interests solely as restricted and deficit based, the occupational therapy practitioner will miss an avenue for utilizing interests to facilitate improved outcomes for adolescents and adults. This webcast session presents a conceptual model of intervention for ASD that offers an "inside out" perspective with the voice of the individual with ASD as central; and highlights strategies and methods to engage interests, presume intellect, see beyond surface behaviors and adapt the environment for improved outcomes for adolescents and young adults with ASD.
At the conclusion of the session, the learner will be able to:
- Identify principles of self determination theory as they relate to their practices with adolescents and adults with autism spectrum disorders.
- Choose information on preferred interests to formulate a more strengths based approach to intervention that values autonomy and choice.
