PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

This webinar is the first session in a three-part series examining the role of occupational therapy in driving and community mobility. It provides a foundational overview of current practice, guided by the AOTA official document Driving and Community Mobility in Occupational Therapy Practice (2024). Participants will hear from an expert panel of practitioners who will outline key issues, share real‑world perspectives, and discuss practical treatment approaches. The session highlights the essential role that generalist occupational therapy practitioners play in supporting clients with the complex IADL of driving and promoting safe, independent community mobility.

  • Define the complexities of driving as an IADL and opportunities for occupational therapy interventions.
  • Demonstrate the importance of addressing driving needs and concerns in generalist occupational therapy practice.


Speakers

Susie Touchinsky

Susie Touchinsky, OTR/L, SCDCM, CDRS is an occupational therapist and Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialist with Specialty Certification in Driving and Community Mobility from AOTA. As the owner of Adaptive Mobility, she is a leading educator for occupational therapy practitioners entering the field of driver rehabilitation. Susie actively volunteers with professional associations, she currently serves on the NMEDA Board, to advance best practice in driving rehab and occupational therapy.


Scott Trudeau

Scott A. Trudeau, PhD, MAOT has practice experience related to occupational therapy in geriatrics and mental health. Scott brings his many years of occupational therapy practice to the association, drawing on his extensive experience across health care. His interests focus on factors contributing to productive aging, successful community management, and support for adults with chronic illnesses like Alzheimer's disease. Scott currently serves as the Director of Practice Engagement at AOTA.


Amy Lane

Amy Lane, OTR/L, CDRS is the Director of Education, Training & Conference at the NMEDA. Prior to this, she was a Clinical Instructor in the Department of Rehabilitation Science & Technology at the University of Pittsburgh and managed a comprehensive driver rehabilitation program. She has more than 35 years of experience practicing as an occupational therapist, with more than 25 of those years dedicated to the field of driver rehabilitation and auto-mobility industry.
