Assistive technology is often associated with specialized devices but many of our clients already have powerful accessibility tools in their pockets and homes.

Please join the Rehabilitation and Disability SIS and the Environmental Modifications Community of Practice while we explore how occupational therapy practitioners can use built-in smartphone accessibility features and smart home technology to improve independence, safety, and participation in everyday occupations.

Topics include built- in accessibility features, voice assistants and smart home devices for controlling lights, thermostats, doors, entertainment systems and other aspects of the home environment.

In this discussion, we will explore how practitioners can identify opportunities for technology-based solutions, match accessibility features to individual client needs, and consider how smartphones, tablets and smart home technology can work together as part of a larger access system.

Using practical examples and case-based discussion, participants will share challenges and successes in incorporating everyday technology into OT practice and discuss strategies for moving beyond simply accessing technology toward using it to support meaningful occupational participation.

Our discussion will be led by Amanda (Mandy) Summers, MS, OTR/L, ATP who is an occupational therapist working in the Assistive Technology Clinic at the Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore, MD. She specializes in the treatment of spinal cord injuries and assistive technology with a focus on access to mobile devices, computers, adaptive gaming and smart home tech. She has been an assistive technology professional (ATP) since 2017.

All are welcome and encouraged to participate.
