One in 8 Americans ages 65 or older has a neurocognitive disorder, and this number is predicted to rise rapidly. Occupational therapists bring a unique focus on function to a global effort to understand the brain and address NCDs. The linkages among brain structures, processes, and function is reflected in this Self-Paced Clinical Course. After completing this SPCC, readers will:
· Recognize the neurological underpinnings, cognitive and behavioral symptoms, and progression of several major types of neurocognitive disorders;
· Delineate the psychosocial, emotional, and occupational effects of neurocognitive disorders;
· Recognize the critical role of the primary caregiver and family in the care for a person with neurocognitive disorder;
· Identify the translational concepts guiding implementation of evidence-based therapeutic interventions for clients with neurocognitive disorder and their family caregivers;
· Identify the components of a comprehensive functional evaluation for clients with neurocognitive disorder and their family caregivers;
· Recognize the factors affecting quality of life for clients with neurocognitive disorder and their family caregivers;
· Recognize the typical effect of neurocognitive disorders on participation in education, work, play, leisure, social participation, activities of daily living (ADL), and instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) performance areas; and,
· Delineate the characteristics and benefits of community-based occupational therapy services for clients with neurocognitive disorder and their families.
Features include self-checks, a glossary, and an extended case study in which a client with NCD is followed through intervention. They are designed to assist readers and course learners in further developing their clinical competency in working with people with mild and major NCD.
This first volume in AOTA’s “Neurorehabilitation in Occupational Therapy Series,” can serve as a textbook for advanced-level occupational therapy students and assist in skill development for practicing clinicians. The Self-Paced Clinical Course is the 2nd edition of the “Dementia” module published in Core Concepts in Neurorehabilitation (2006).
