In today’s society, approximately 1 in 100 children is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Children with an ASD experience a range of occupational challenges that make providing therapeutic services to them both exciting and challenging. This course is the first of a three-part series that builds on content from the 3rd edition of Autism: A Comprehensive Occupational Therapy Approach and offers occupational therapy practitioners the opportunity to expand their understanding and practice with children on the autism spectrum through building the intentional relationship, using occupational therapy evaluation strategies, addressing sensory integration challenges, and planning intervention for praxis. Highlights also include video clips and strategies that will enhance the provision of evaluation and intervention services.

By completing all learning activities, participants will
- Identify strategies and skills for conducting effective, occupation-based evaluations with children with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs);
- Recognize how to interpret evaluation assessment results and plan meaningful intervention for children with an ASD;
- Recognize how to address sensory integration deficits in children with an ASD using an sensory integration approach in order to build a foundation for functional skill development;
- Identify the knowledge and skills needed to address praxis deficits in order to facilitate motor and play skills;
- Identify strategies for reducing barriers and building an intentional relationship with children with an ASD.
