Description:
Part C of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) outlines early intervention (EI) service delivery for infants and toddlers at risk for, or diagnosed with, developmental disabilities and their families.Contemporary EI services are designed to enhance the family’s capacity in promoting their child’s development through engagement in everyday routines. Best practice suggests that children develop within the context of everyday activities and routines embedded in nurturing caregiving relationships. Hence, models of teaming and approaches to service delivery in early intervention have shifted from child-focused service delivery to more family-centered approaches within natural environments. Coaching of caregivers and teaming using a Primary Service Provider model are examples of current early intervention practices. Occupational therapists are well-suited to provide services using these interventions and teaming approaches. The purpose of this course is to discuss coaching as an intervention approach and to describe the Primary Service Provider (PSP) model of teaming. Resources for occupational therapy practitioners to enhance advocacy for their role in early intervention while coaching and practicing within the PSP framework are provided.
