A stroke can have a devastating effect on the patient and the caregiver. Family caregivers may have little or no training to deal with the physical, emotional, or financial burdens caused by this illness. An OT-led supportive education program can help reduce the stress of caregivers and improve the quality of life of both the care recipient and the care provider. Design and implementation of a caregiver program to benefit both patient and caregiver will be covered.
Following this presentation, the practitioner will be able to:
· Identify the reason for stress and the care burden faced by caregivers of persons with stroke.
· Identify elements of a plan to educate caregivers on aspects of caregiving and well-being of self.
