Description:
Social and Emotional Learning  (SEL) is not a single skill that can be mastered, it's a constellation of skills and factors that support student participation in schools. Social and emotional learning occurs throughout the lifespan from the moment we are born until the end of life.

This course will cover five core areas of SEL:

Self-management is the ability to manage one's emotions, thoughts, and behaviors effectively in different situations, and to achieve goals and aspirations;

Self-awareness is the ability to understand one's own emotions, thoughts, and values, and how they influence behavior across context;

Responsible decision making is the ability to make caring and constructive choices about personal behavior. This includes the capacity to consider ethics and safety and to evaluate the benefits and consequences of various choices for personal social and collective wellbeing;

Relationship skills are the ability to establish and maintain healthy and supportive relationships. And to effectively navigate settings with diverse individuals and groups;

Social awareness is the ability to understand the perspectives of, and empathize with others, including those from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and contexts.

Although we do not expect that children will master these skills, what we hope to do is get elementary school students on a path of lifelong growth in these areas and help them develop the skills to the extent needed to be successful in an elementary school setting and beyond.
