Description:
This course is designed to provide an overview of diagnoses and treatment considerations for common orthopedic conditions encountered by occupational therapy practitioners in the acute care setting. The course begins with an exploration of the important skills that practitioners brings to the multidisciplinary team when facilitating the return of patients to their full self-care potential.
Lessons include information on conditions involving the cranium, thorax, spine, pelvis, and lower extremity as well as implications for the OTP and client during the therapeutic process. Throughout the course, learners will have the opportunity to apply new information to various case scenarios and interactive elements to enhance retention.
*Orthopedic conditions of the upper extremity are covered more specifically in the course related to hand therapy and are not highlighted in this unit’s content.

Upon completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- Understand the role of the OTP working with individuals with orthopedic conditions.
- Discuss common impacts of orthopedic conditions on patients' occupational performance.
- Determine safety precautions and their impact on participation in activities and occupations.

- Identify context and environmental factors that facilitate occupational performance.
