Course Description
The prevalence of autism has increased exponentially during the past decade, and the numbers continue to rise each year. Despite programs and services that have been developed for children on the autism spectrum, society is underprepared to provide support and resources for all those who are transitioning to adulthood during the next 10 to 20 years.

This course explores the critical issues of autism in adulthood and provides occupational therapy practitioners with the knowledge and tools to advocate for the health and community participation of young adults and adults on the autism spectrum. Using multiple sources and the perspectives of adults on the autism spectrum, this course presents information, strategies, and resources that can be used to support adults on the autism spectrum at all ages and ability levels.

Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to:

• Identify the strengths and capacities of young adults on the autism spectrum to engage in meaningful occupations
• Identify the challenges and barriers that limit engagement in meaningful occupations for young adults on the autism spectrum
• Identify the role of occupational therapy practitioners for supporting the health and participation of young adults on the autism spectrum and their families
• Recognize the role of occupational therapy practitioners for advocating for the participation of young adults on the autism spectrum in work, educational, community, and health care environments
