Description:

This fully narrated module will address the professional and ethical obligations of occupational therapists to identify performance deficits and safety risks that affect safety in driving and community mobility. Using the principles in the AOTA 2020 Occupational Therapy Code of Ethics (2020), occupational therapy practitioners will be able to identify the potential threats to clients. Occupational therapists will learn the importance of addressing performance skills deficits and related client factors for safety in the performance of ADLs and IADLs. Decisions are based on quantitative data, clinical reasoning/judgement and evidence of the impact of conditions on driving/mobility. Professional and ethical responsibilities, occupational therapy evaluation, considerations for safe driving, communication with clients, legal obligations and documentation procedures will be covered in this module.

 

Learning Objectives:

·       Recognize the professional and ethical obligation of practitioners to identify performance deficits that may affect safety in IADLs, specifically driving and community mobility.

·       Recognize the Principles in the AOTA 2020 Occupational Therapy Code of Ethics (2020), that support the ethical responsibility of practitioners to identify and communicate the potential for harm to clients and relevant stakeholders.

·       Identify factors that indicate the probability of safety risks as well as the related legal requirements to report the risks and the ethical obligations to warn, when considering the occupation of driving.
