Overview
The iPad is a game changer for students with ow vision. The accessibility features, accessories, various applications (apps) etc. enable it to be an all in one device. This webinar will provide information first on the built in accessibility features including new changes in IOS 9 for Second, a large number of applications will be presented that enable students with low vision to keep up with their peers in the wide variety of tasks and demands. Apps for reading, writing, math, science, and social studies will be presented along with apps for the expanded core curriculum. Also, examples of tactile overlays for diagrams will be shown.
Learning Objectives
- Participants will identify 3 new features in IOS 9 for students with low vision.
- Participants will identify and describe the function of 5 applications that are useful for low vision students who attend regular classes.
- Participants will identify 3 applications that are useful for teaching areas of the expanded core curriculum including keyboarding, mobility, and daily living skills.

Betsy Flener, Assistive Technology and Low Vision Education Specialist, Green River Regional Educational Cooperative
Dr. Betsy Flener completed her doctorate in 1992 from Vanderbilt University with a major in special education with emphasis on visual and multiple disabilities. She has over 30 years experience in the field of visual impairments. She is a national speaker and has presented on various topics including literacy and multiple disabilities, technology, the iPad, Septo-Optic Dysplasia, Response to Intervention, and Designing Systems of Communication for Students with Multiple Disabilities. She was a regional consultant for the Kentucky School for the Blind and now is an Assistive Technology and Low Vision Education Specialist for the Green River Regional Educational Cooperative. She recently co-authored The Tactile Talk Toolkit which is the first tactile symbol system with voice output for the iPad. In March, she received the National Braille Press's Louis Braille Touch of Genius Competition for Innovation.
