Course Description
This course will explore organizational ethics issues that may influence the ethical decision making of occupational therapy practitioners. Course material will explore ethical conflicts that may arise between the practitioner as an organizational employee and as an autonomous health care provider. Participants will be introduced to strategies that will assist in addressing situations in which occupational therapy practitioners may be pressured by an organization’s administration to provide services that are in conflict with their personal or professional code of ethics. Conversely, participants will have the opportunity to explore how their own actions as members of the health care organization support an ethical culture.

Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to

  1. Recognize how the changing health care environment has contributed to organizational ethics issues.
  2. Differentiate organizational and clinical ethics affecting occupational therapy practice.
  3. Recognize how moral foundations affect organizational ethics decision making.
  4. Distinguish how ethical decision making may affect organizational goals.
  5. Recognize the roles occupational therapy leaders and managers play in supporting an ethical culture.
