ABSTRACT
Occupational therapy practice in home health can be rewarding, but it can also be challenging, as the complexity of this practice area is difficult for stakeholders besides practitioners to understand. Home health practice, indeed home health care, is shaped largely by Medicare regulations that govern agencies serving home health care, and Medicare coverage policies govern payment. As a result, occupational therapy practitioners in this area must understand both the Medicare requirements for occupational therapy services and Medicare’s expectations for documentation. To be successful in home health, practitioners need to understand and know how to apply the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework: Domain and Process, 2nd Edition (Framework-II; American Occupational Therapy Association [AOTA], 2008) to their practice. The Framework-II—an official AOTA document intended for use by occupational therapists, occupational therapy assistants, and external audiences—discusses the interrelated constructs that define the practice of occupational therapy and serves as a guide for providing occupational therapy services.
